Adolescents¡¯ Smartphone Dependence and Life Satisfaction: Perceived Parenting Attitudes and the Adolescents¡¯ Somatic Symptoms as Sequential Mediators

Abstract
Objectives: This study examines the structural relations among adolescents¡¯ smartphone dependence, perceived parenting attitudes, the adolescents¡¯ somatic symptoms, and life satisfaction.

Methods: The authors investigated whether adolescents¡¯ smartphone dependence predicted their life satisfaction. Also, the authors examined whether perceived parenting attitudes and somatic symptoms respectively and sequentially mediated the relation between smartphone dependence and life satisfaction of the adolescents. The sample consisted of 2,590 adolescents from the Korean Children and Youths Panel Survey (KCYPS) data in 2018. The adolescents were in the first grade of middle school. The data were analyzed using Mplus and SPSS.

Results: The results showed that the adolescents¡¯ smartphone dependence negatively influenced their life satisfaction. Perceived parenting attitudes and the adolescents¡¯ somatic symptoms respectively mediated the relations between smartphone dependence and life satisfaction. Perceived parenting attitudes and the adolescents¡¯ somatic symptoms sequentially mediated the relation between smartphone dependence and life satisfaction.

Conclusions: The implication of this study focuses on the importance of family practices and intervention regarding adolescents¡¯ smartphone dependence and the development of family programs reducing adolescents¡¯ somatic symptoms.
